Judtho - The New Chess

Judtho is a completely new game based on chess...

Here's a quick overview (for chess players):

  • Judtho is for two, three or four players (the four player game is the richest in strategy but the most complex).  Like chess, it is fairly easy to learn but has greater strategic and tactical possibilities.

  • The aim is still to checkmate one's opponents.  The King, Queen, Rook and Bishop have identical moves.  The Knight's move is the same but it has new powers.  The Pawn can move two squares always & can jump over friendly Pawns.  Draws by stalemate, the 50 move rule and repeated position exist but castling and en passant are not possible.

  • One of the main crucial differences between chess and Judtho is that the game always starts with an empty board.  Players take turns to place one piece at a time within their 6 x 4 square coloured section (or Realm).

  • The two player game is played on a 12 x 6 board (i.e. half the board used for the 3 or 4 player games).

  • Judtho is best played with four players, termed White, Red, Yellow and Black.  White and Yellow compete with each other to checkmate either Red or Black and vice versa for Red and Black.

  • After the first checkmate, the checkmating and checkmated players become First and Second Allies respectively and play against the other two players.  Checkmate of one of the partners' Kings forms a triple partnership; again, the new checkmating player is the major partner.  Alternatively,
